Prince George's County Health Department to Debut New "Be a Part of the Healthy Revolution" Brand Fall 2013

New thrust on technology and social media

LARGO, MD –The Prince George's County Health Department will turn the switch on its new "Be a part of the Healthy Revolution" brand, which includes the introduction of a website - a premier online gateway to a variety of healthcare services.

"Too many Marylanders are among the 90 million Americans currently living with chronic diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension," explains Pamela B. Creekmur, Health Officer. "Too many Prince George's County residents incur life-altering disabilities and/or experience premature death due to having a chronic disease such as stroke, heart attack and cancer. Too often, access to health care is limited to onsite visits at local health departments. The Health Department is indeed on the precipice of revolutionizing how we make healthy living more accessible to County residents. We live in an electronic, technology-driven age, and the Health Department staff is stepping up how we communicate with our constituents and how they will be able to access healthcare information online and via social media."

To continue to reach Baby Boomers, Gen X and Gen Y, we must be more aggressive, more radical in capturing these critically important demographics via the web and social media.

This fall, the Health Department will introduce kiosks stations that will be located strategically throughout the County's Maryland-National Park and Planning Recreation centers.

When County residents visit the kiosk stations, residents that are enrolled with a pediatrician or primary health care provider will be able to obtain their children's health profiles and adults can monitor their personalized medical wellness plans. Touch screen computer monitors will give users immediate access to chronic disease prevention, health related second-hand smoke facts and other wellness tips, facts, and statistics.

Via the kiosk stations and, County residents will also be able to receive community news and events, such as when and where health fairs will be held, and a listing of local farmers markets where healthy eating tips and cooking demonstrations that may be taking place.

The "Be a part of the Healthy Revolution" initiatives - which include the kiosks stations and – are funded by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Prince George's County Parks and Recreation.
